Whether you’re a snow bunny or not, this sustainably built one-bedroom cabin perched high above Thredbo Valley offers unbeatable seclusion. Hand built with 26 tonnes of granite rock and completely off-grid, Mill Cabin is a homage to the old stockman cottages peppered throughout the high country built on the site of an old timber mill. A key focus of the entire build, from construction to operations, was to stay clear of mass produced ’stuff’. Much of the furniture (and the concrete basin) was crafted by the owners themselves from local blackbutt timber and you’ll find beautiful vases, cups and bowls by Australian makers, and Mud Australia ceramic lighting, throughout. While it’s utterly harmonious inside, the view across the main range to Mount Perisher – especially when dusted with snow – is the real showstopper. Enjoy it while soaking in the wood-fired outdoor bath or sitting around the fire pit. And don’t be surprised if you cross paths with resident wombat, Wilmer, along with wallabies, emus and deer during your stay. Spend your days on the slopes, or hiking or cycling one of the nearby trails, then cosy up by the fire and sink into the sumptuous linen bedding for the kind of sleep you’ve been craving.
